President Donald Trump has redefined the term "energy in the executive".
In just three weeks, the Department of Government Efficiency has -- to put it mildly -- blown the lid off of decades of fraud, waste, and abuse, exposing how a tidal wave of taxpayer money has run through non-government organizations and other entities such as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that dot Washington, D.C., and enrich career politicians and their families and cronies.
Still, there is much to be done and as Americans know all too well, progress toward efficient, sensible government can be obstructed and even undone by those in every branch of government, the administrative state, and even members of the media who look upon public service as self-service from the United States Treasury.
The breathtaking revelations of the past few weeks and so much more that will be revealed simply reinforce the absolute necessity for the structural changes that are demonstrably supported by overwhelming numbers of Republicans, Democrats, and independents -- changes that only an Article V convention can bring.
Just last autumn, a significant poll released by the Susquehanna Polling and Research firm confirmed that 88 percent of Americans support fixed term limits and 71 percent believe that more restrictions need to be placed upon the federal government.
According to that same poll, a remarkable 68 percent of Americans support a meeting of the states to discuss amending the Constitution to solidify federal fiscal responsibility, term limits, and limitations upon federal power.
Nineteen states have passed the limited-purpose uniform Convention of States (COS) application to compel Congress to call an Article V convention. Several legislatures across the country have already taken action this year to add to the number of passed states and get to the required 34 for convention.
The COS resolution has passed favorably out legislative committees in states such as New Hampshire and Iowa. The Wyoming Senate and the South Dakota Senate passed the COS resolution. In January, Connecticut became the 50th state in the history of our movement to file a COS resolution shortly after the resolution was filed in the state legislature of neighboring Massachusetts.
The growing momentum for an Article V convention in a diverse array of so-called "red" states and "blue" states reflects the polling data released by Susquehanna. Americans from all corners are disgusted with the ways of Washington, D.C., and are demanding not just reform, but permanent solutions.
The real divide in our country is between the Potomac River rats who have long been profiting from corruption and the rest of us, in whom power is supposed to reside. It is long past time to put aside Team Red and Team Blue and become Team Red, White, and Blue so that all Americans regardless of political orientation can become self-governing citizens who can trust and respect those who are in Washington to truly serve and represent us.
It is now time for an Article V convention that can begin the process of delivering what a clear and strong majority of Americans want: term limits, fiscal sanity, and curbed federal power. What better place to have that bipartisan and agreeable discussion than an Article V convention that can return power to where it belongs?
