Iowa school flags nearly 400 books for sexual content

Published in Blog on August 09, 2023 by Jakob Fay

Nearly 400 books in Iowa’s Urbandale Community School District have been flagged for possibly violating a new state law that prohibits sexual content in K-12 school libraries.

The bill, which went into effect in July, forbids schools from purchasing books that depict sex acts and requires that they review existing catalogs and remove any such books. Additionally, schools must list educational materials online, allow parents to file complaints against objectionable material, and inform parents if their child has “changed” genders. Schools also cannot teach about sexual orientation and gender identity.

In accordance with these laws, 374 books have been set aside for further review. Flagged titles include “Gender Queer,” “The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish,” and “Lawn Boy.”

“Lawn Boy,” which has appeared in many schools nationwide, graphically describes oral sex between two ten-year-old boys. It also features strong language, including the f-bomb 42 times. Interestingly, the book’s author, despite defending his work from bans, admitted that it was “intended for an adult audience.” If that’s the case, no wonder parents are pushing to remove the book from school! They can hardly be blamed.

“Gender Queer” isn’t any better, featuring “graphic and gross descriptions of sex and masturbation. Any reasonably competent school librarian should be able to see in an instant that it is not appropriate for a public school library.”

These books, and others like them, have found an unlikely ally in the president of the United States.

In Joe Biden’s 2024 presidential reelection campaign announcement, he blasted “MAGA extremists” for banning multiple pornographic books, including, for example, “The Bluest Eye,” which depicts “incest, pedophilia, a graphic description of one married woman’s distaste for intercourse with her husband, an odd description of the same woman’s affinity for masturbating with a pet in her lap, and a graphic flashback in which [she] recalls when intercourse with her husband was pleasurable.”

Yes, Joe Biden wants that book in your kids’ school. And if you disagree—as most any good parent would—you’re an “extremist.”

Amazingly, the same left that favors militant censorship when it comes to “misinformation” on social media or beloved author Robert Dahl’s not-woke-enough children’s classics also supports books about masturbation, sex, and radical gender ideologies in the hands of minors. They become suddenly very persnickety about “free speech” and ending censorship.

In Joe Biden’s America, you cannot question vaccine efficacy on Twitter, but your 10-year-old can read pornography in the school library. The word "fat" is inappropriate, and must be posthumously cut from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but the f-bomb is acceptable in books for 6th graders.

Thankfully, dozens of states, such as Iowa, are pushing back against this gender insanity, proving once again the gaping divide between most everyday Americans’ values and the federal government’s far-left, woke agenda.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
