REPORT: White House violated First Amendment to stifle Daily Wire, other ‘polarizing’ news sources

Published in Blog on August 08, 2023 by Jakob Fay

Yesterday I reviewed several accounts of collusion between federal would-be despots and Big Tech oligarchs. From asking Facebook to be “vigilant” against the Hunter Biden laptop story to pressuring other platforms to suspend prominent vaccine skeptics, there seems to be no limit to how far the government will go to silence the president’s critics.

Now, shocking reports from volume three of Rep. Jim Jordan’s “Facebook Files” show that the White House pushed for Facebook to reduce conservative media outlet The Daily Wire’s social media reach.

“Newly subpoenaed internal notes of meetings between Facebook executives and Biden Admin officials reveal more about the lengths the Biden White House wanted to go to control true speech on Facebook,” tweeted Jordan, who serves as Chairman of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government. Through the committee, Jordan obtained damning documents exposing phone calls between the White House and Facebook after threatening to hold Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress.

Allegedly, the documents revealed that White House Digital Director Rob Flaherty "asked Facebook whether it could promote The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal over The Daily Wire… Flaherty asked Facebook employees, ‘If you were to change the algorithm so that people were more likely to see NYT, WSJ, any authoritative news source over The Daily Wire, Tomi Lahren, polarizing people. You wouldn’t have a mechanism to check the material impact?’”

Editor Emeritus of The Daily Wire, Ben Shapiro, pointed out that the White House specifically sought to crack down on “vaccine misinformation” around the same time that The Daily Wire sued the Biden Administration over the constitutionality of its vaccine mandate. He vowed that the company would hit back over the censorship, which he called “a First Amendment violation” and “quite possibly a criminal violation.”

“We are the site that filed a landmark lawsuit challenging the OSHA vaccine mandate under Joe Biden,” Shapiro reminded his readers. “We are the only major company in the United States on the Right to actually file a lawsuit against the OSHA vaccine mandate, while other major American media companies on the Right were actively forcing their employees to get the shot.”

“We were suing the federal government to stop it,” he continued. “We are not afraid to sue the federal government again.”

Shapiro explained that the company is currently weighing its options and investigating whether or not Daily Wire website traffic declined due to the White House’s actions. He said they are willing to spend upwards of millions of dollars to “stop [the Biden White House] from ever violating the civil rights of Americans by pressuring Facebook and other social media companies.”

As a Convention of States endorser, Ben Shapiro knows that the federal government has too much power. He also knows that Washington will never willingly give up that power. Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
