Gov. Abbott declares invasion at border, invoking state power against the D.C. Swamp

Published in Blog on November 15, 2022 by Brianna Kraemer

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has declared an invasion at the southern border, prompting the National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety to finally spring into action.

The move comes after a long battle with the federal government. The Biden administration has been insistent on allowing immigrants to stay in the U.S. after crossing the border into Texas illegally.

This has been a strain on Texas communities as illegal immigration has hit record highs, 2.3 million in fiscal year 2022.

By invoking the Invasion Clause of the Texas Constitution, the state is now prepared to take the following steps, as laid out by the governor:

  • Deploy the National Guard to safeguard our border & to repel & turn back immigrants trying to cross the border illegally;
  • Deploy the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to arrest & return to the border immigrants who crossed illegally & deploy DPS to arrest illegal immigrants for criminal activity;
  • Build a border wall in multiple counties on the border;
  • Deploy gun boats to secure the border;
  • Designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations
  • Enter into a compact with other states to secure the border;
  • Enter into agreements with foreign powers to enhance border security; &
  • Provide resources for border counties to increase their efforts to respond to the border invasion.

This is a powerful example of a state maximizing its power against Washington's destruction of American cities, states, and local communities.

In a tweet Tuesday, Abbott wrote: “I invoked the Invasion Clauses of the U.S. & Texas Constitutions to fully authorize Texas to take unprecedented measures to defend our state against an invasion. I’m using that constitutional authority, & other authorization & Executive Orders to keep our state & country safe.”

Gov. Abbott is a strong supporter of COS and Texas is one of the 19 states that have passed our resolution.

As the federal government grows, it only hopes to see the demise of individual state authority. Government only expands until the people act. Convention of States is made up of the people, and we're acting to preserve our nation and our individual rights.

When it comes down to it, the states look after their people much better than the federal government ever will. Help us call for a Convention of States to rein in the power of Washington. Sign our petition below!

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
