In her 1883 poem ""The New Colossus" Emma Lazarus wrote “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” This verse is inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.
For centuries, people have yearned to legally come to the United States to pursue their dreams, to work hard, and to achieve a better life. But what is currently happening at our southern border threatens the safety of the people of Arkansas.
On March 11 Senator Cotton stated on Fox News Primetime, “If you’re a human trafficker, or drug dealer, or all those migrants wearing the Biden Let Us In shirts, you’d give [Biden] an A++, but the American people would give him an F.”
The New York Post is reporting that “Biden unleashed a flood of illegal migrants at the border, including thousands of unescorted children” due to the reversal of President Trump’s border initiatives.
The same article featured Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, who stated that the National Border Patrol does “not have the resources to stop the cartels from bringing in illegal aliens [and] from bringing in drugs.”
Mr. Judd described the situation as a “crisis.”
On March 16 Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that the border surge “is likely the worst the situation has been in 20 years.”
On March 11 Eddie Scarry wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Examiner claiming that “Joe Biden is the human trafficking president” as a result of the border chaos.
So why are so many people flooding the southern border now? Probably because of the perception that the current administration is encouraging illegal immigration.
On December 11, 2018, fireworks ignited during a televised meeting in the Oval Office between President Trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer. The group argued over five billion dollars requested by President Trump for border security.
Five. Billion. Dollars. U.S. government revenue for 2018 was reported at 3.33 trillion dollars. The five billion dollars represented approximately 0.15% of 2018’s annual revenue. To put this ratio into financial perspective, this spending would be analogous to an average Arkansan family spending 75 dollars on a Ring doorbell system.
Contrast this five billion border wall security request in 2018 to transportation spending in the 1.9 trillion COVID-19 economic relief package signed into law on March 11. The new law includes $56 billion for transportation.
Ultimately, President Trump diverted money from the military budget to secure border wall funding. However, he was met with legal challenge after legal challenge until the US Supreme Court ultimately sided with the president in July 2020 in a 5-4 ruling.
This ruling allowed President Trump to add roughly 500 miles of border wall, something politicians have been promising to work on for decades.
On March 17 Senator Boozman and Senator Cotton joined 38 other Republican senators and sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office comptroller Gene Dodaro stating that the suspension of border wall funding without lawful justification violated the Impoundment Control Act.

The only way the American people will ever get term limits is through the Convention of States.
