As the debate over “banned books” heats up across the country, one school board member in Fairfax, Virginia, is going above and beyond to signal his support for sexually explicit content in school libraries.
Karl Frisch, who was recently elected to serve as Fairfax County School Board chairman, ditched the Bible and was sworn in on a stack of books with graphic depictions of gay sex, which critics have blasted as pornography.

The Fairfax County School Board members, all of whom are Democrats, have come under intense public scrutiny over the past few years for opposing Governor Glenn Youngkin, who was elected on a parental rights campaign, and his education agenda. For example, when Youngkin announced an executive order banning critical race theory in the classroom, the school clapped back with a survey to students asking them sensitive questions about racism.
Fairfax is also often credited as the first school board meeting at which a concerned mother publicly shared graphic passages from LGBTQ-themed books, propelling the issue to national notoriety.
Frisch, who was in attendance at that meeting, has since doubled down on his support for the controversial books in question, often referred to as “banned books.” His campaign website boasts that he was “sworn in on a stack of the five LGBTQ-themed books most frequently banned by other school systems.” These include “Lawn Boy,” “Gender Queer,” “Flamer,” and “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” all of which have been criticized and flagged by other schools for sexual content.
Frisch also ran an unorthodox campaign, focusing his fire on “religious extremists” — parents who opposed his left-wing agenda.
“The religious nuts come out of the woodwork,” he said. “Fairfax has a history of being an epicenter for right-wing religious fanaticism.”
Additionally, the newly sworn-in chairman’s interest in Virginia schools has been questioned as he does not have children and is a political consultant from California who was first elected to the board with massive out-of-state funds.
Ultimately, Karl Frisch has emerged as an enemy to one of the most fundamental rights in human society — a parent’s right to educate their kids according to their values. But more than that, by openly promoting pornography in a K-12 school, he has crossed a line that should be universally condemned.
