"Rich Men North of Richmond" officially rises to number one song in nation

Published in Blog on August 22, 2023 by Brianna Kraemer

If there's any indication that a mass faction of America is displeased with the way Washington operates, look no further than the new song "Rich Men North of Richmond."

It rose to the number one song in America on Billboard's Top 100 singles chart on Monday, and the entire song is about the wealthy elites who are destroying America. The song bashes Washington politicians and the direction America is headed, repeatedly calling it "a damn shame what the world's gotten to."

The chorus says: "Livin' in the new world / With an old soul / These rich men north of Richmond / Lord knows they all just wanna have total control / Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do / And they don't think you know, but I know that you do / 'Cause your dollar ain't sh**t and it's taxed to no end / 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond."

The lyrics detail other frustrations that resonate with many, like homeless people suffering in the street, obese people sucking off government welfare, and the destruction of young men.

Country singer Oliver Anthony became an overnight star from the hit song. He reportedly struggled with drugs and alcohol, but just last month promised God he'd get sober for help following his dreams. With over 32 million views on YouTube and over 17.5 million streams on services like Spotify and Apple Music, he's turned his life around with a song that indicates a mutual feeling of disgust spanning across America.

Not surprisingly, the mainstream media was quick to criticize the song in a similar way it attacks other conservative hits like Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" and the movie Sound of Freedom. The New York Times called it an "underdog mentality" and Rolling Stone called it a 'populist' and 'polarizing song.

However, Anthony says he sits "pretty dead center down the aisle on politics and always have." Disdain toward Washington is bipartisan, and Anthony proves this through his personal views and through his music.

The rich men north of Richmond were supposed to be public servants, not wealthy elitists. Democrats and Republicans alike can agree that these rich men need to be reined in.

Convention of States offers a bipartisan solution the states can take to address the federal government's blatant overreach. Through Article V of the Constitution, we can enact a balanced budget, term limits, and power constraints that reduce the entire government's grasp on the 50 states.

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
