The global tensions confronting the United States have left Americans feeling uncertain and on edge when it comes to world peace.
About 43% of voters think we are on the brink of another world war, and an additional 26% are not sure, according to a new COSA poll in partnership with the Trafalgar Group. The largely pessimistic sentiment comes as the Ukraine-Russia war continues and as pressures between the U.S. and China rise.
Over half of Republicans (56.7%) believe World War III is imminent while just a quarter (26.4%) of Democrats believe a world war is upon us.
The sharp ideological divide between parties coincides with differing national security priorities, such as Chinese interference and border security.
As COS President Mark Meckler points out, our "weakness and incompetence–on the border, on energy policy, and on our approach to China–are increasing the risk of international armed conflict in a highly-nuclearized age."
While a large plurality of Americans believe a world war is possible in the near future, voters also overwhelmingly believe state and federal governments should cut business and investment ties with Chinese companies.
Most Americans want Biden to be more aggressive in leading global efforts to contain China. However, the American people have come to the realization that Chinese accountability is not an interest of the current administration.
