During a Wednesday hearing on the southern border crisis, a Texas representative urged Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas to confront a family attending the hearing face-to-face.
The family suffered the loss of two family members last month, a seven-year-old daughter and her 71-year-old grandmother. The tragic deaths were taken at the hands of an illegal, human trafficker transporting 11 illegal immigrants over the southern border in the back of his truck.
The chilling disbelief was felt as Texas Rep. August Pfluger first told the devastating story of the two females killed.
"On March 13 of this year, a Texas DPS trooper attempted to stop Rassian Comer for speeding. And Comer refused to stop, and a reckless, high-speed chase ensued," explained Plunger. "The suspect began to nonchalantly livestream himself driving at 105 miles per hour, and evading the police officer behind him. At the same time, a 71-year-old grandmother and her seven-year-old granddaughter were on their way home after a playdate."
Comer blew through a red light, striking the grandmother, Maria Alvarez, and granddaughter, Emilia Tambunga. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.
The sickening outcome could have been prevented if Mayorkas and the Biden administration were serious about securing the southern border. Three family members, including Alisa, Maria's daughter and mother to Emilia, sat staring at Mayorkas in Washington, D.C.
"Will you turn around and offer them your condolences and an apology for the failure of your administration that led to the death of their loved ones? They're right there," pressed Pfluger.
Mayorkas stood up, turned around, and spoke to the family, at one point saying, "My heart breaks for your loss."
This tragic loss of life is unacceptable and is a result of failing U.S. policies. How many more events like this have to occur for legislators to take action? The people are saying "enough" at a massive rally scheduled to take place in Austin next week.
