MUST-READ: Your latest lineup of need-to-know news!

Published in Blog on August 14, 2023 by Jakob Fay

Happy anniversary, Convention of States! This week, the grassroots are celebrating 10 years of Article V activism and patriotism. To kick off this exciting week, check out your need-to-know news, as covered on last week’s edition of The Liberty Update. Listen to the stories here, on the podcast, or read the stories below.

1. Official proposals passed at the Simulated Article V Convention & ‘Washington is watching’: Meckler, Farris, Santorum respond to amendments passed out of simulation

Commissioners representing 49 states gathered in Williamsburg, Virginia two weeks ago for the Simulated Article V Convention hosted by Convention of States Foundation. Six amendments came out of the simulation after careful deliberation and debate. Take a deep dive into the amendments with these important summaries.

2. Iowa school flags nearly 400 books for sexual content

Nearly 400 books in Iowa’s Urbandale Community School District have been flagged for possibly violating a new state law that prohibits sexual content in K-12 school libraries.

The bill, which went into effect in July, forbids schools from purchasing books that depict sex acts and requires that they review existing catalogs and remove any such books. Additionally, schools must list educational materials online, allow parents to file complaints against objectionable material, and inform parents if their child has “changed” genders. Schools also cannot teach about sexual orientation and gender identity.

Read more here.

3. Western states 'exploitable': federal authorities own 28% of America's land

Life, liberty, and property are three fundamental rights deeply tied together. If one is seized, the other two are automatically restricted as well, leading to enslavement.

Lands thought to be controlled by the states have long been discreetly controlled by the federal government. An estimated 640 million acres, or 28% of America’s land, is owned and managed by the federal government, according to a congressional research report.

Don’t miss the entire report here.

Thank you for catching up on your need-to-know news with us. Be sure to follow the Convention of States blog for other important headlines and Convention of States' daily podcast for updates on all things COS. And thank you for 10 years of grassroots activism!

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
