The votes are in, and popular Governor Ron DeSantis has been reelected to serve the people of Florida for a second term. Multiple media outlets have officially called the race for the Sunshine State’s incumbent governor, who handily beat his opponent, Representative Charlie Crist.
DeSantis is one of the most popular governors in America. The key to his overwhelming success and popularity has been his unflinching defense of Florida’s state rights. For his first term, DeSantis has been an archetypal example of what a governor should be: someone who prioritizes the people of his own state over the radical, overbearing agenda of Washington, DC.
The Republican, who narrowly won in 2018, enjoyed bipartisan support this time around. He was endorsed by several Florida Democrats and made impressive gains in Miami-Dade, the state’s most populous region, a long-time Democrat stronghold.
Clearly, while many in the media argue that DeSantis is a dangerous radical, his common sense policies have resonated well with the voters of Florida, which used to be considered a swing state.
In a recent interview, he explained why he thinks his political accomplishments have been so well received by everyday Americans: “I was the governor that was saving their jobs, their businesses, and keeping their kids in school during COVID. The Democratic Party opposed me on every single one of those policies and they wanted basically indefinite lockdowns and school closures, and that is not good for blue-collar people. We also have done very strong on crime. When you had the Floyd riots, I immediately called out the National Guard, we were not going to let that happen in Florida, we are a law and order state. And they know I’m a law and order governor, I think that’s important,” he said.
“And then I also think we reflect their values, as parents raising kids, we fought Disney to make sure that kids wouldn’t be sexualized in elementary school by keeping things like gender ideology out of the classroom. But yet it’s the left that wants to put all that in there. So I think you just see Latinos down here, but really blue-collar people generally, saying we’re representing them, we are standing up for them, their jobs, their education, their safety, and their families.”
He also pointed out that his governorship has proven the political establishment wrong on immigration. “My first year, we banned sanctuary cities, and news media thought that that would be not approved down here. And yet, Hispanic voters in Florida had the highest approval rating for our policy to ban sanctuary cities,” he explained.
“We did the transport to Martha’s Vineyard, and people thought that this was going to be so bad and yet Hispanic voters backed me on doing that because they understand the border is out of control. . . . But clearly, the Republican establishment view that you need open borders and amnesty to appeal to Hispanic voters in the United States is dead wrong. It was wrong then. And it’s clearly been proven to be wrong now.”
DeSantis is a proven leader who voters trust to fight against the insanity of modern politics. Convention of States Action is proud to be endorsed by the governor, who said “I've spent years fighting the DC Swamp, and as a candidate for Governor of Florida, I know the states need to use Article V to take the power away from DC. The permanent bureaucracy will never voluntarily give up an ounce of its power. Florida was the second of twelve states that have already passed the Resolution, and I encourage all other state legislatures to support the Convention of States Project and pass the resolution today.”
Governor Ron DeSantis’ victory is a victory for anyone who believes that states’ rights matter; that everyday Americans should not be trampled by an out-of-touch federal government. Now that the voters have given America’s Governor their stamp of approval, it’s exciting to see what the future holds for the Sunshine State.
