Why Does Government Think Our Rights are Conditional?

Published in Blog on November 01, 2021 by John Green

In response to questions about the vaccine mandate, Dr. Fauci, our intrepid pandemic guardian, says that we need to put our personal freedoms on hold for a bit – for the greater good.

Um, no!

That’s not how our freedoms work. From my reading of the Declaration of Independence, our freedoms are granted by God. In the relative ranking of deities, I’m guessing most people would put Two-Mask Fauci a few levels down from the top.

The government didn’t give us our freedom and it can’t take it away. It can suppress those freedoms with brute force – and that is what Fauci is advocating.

But unfortunately, Fauci isn’t the only government functionary that thinks he has the authority to make such rulings. Numerous governors, mayors, and city councils have also curtailed our freedoms.

Their COVID response undermined our property rights, our freedom of assembly, and our freedom of expression. They’re even dictating that we all take an experimental medical treatment now. The “my body, my choice” folks have decided that it’s not our choice except when it pertains to the killing of unborn children. But it is all for the “greater good.”

Politicians, bureaucrats, and even judges have demonstrated an alarming willingness to put our rights on hold for the greater good. There is a term for letting the benefits of the many outweigh the rights of the individual: mob rule.

These officials seem to have all forgotten that America is a country of self-governance. They work for us. We have even given them detailed instructions on how they (as our employees) are to conduct themselves – it's called the Constitution.

It tells them what they are allowed to do, and more importantly, what they are prohibited from doing. In fact, per the Bill of Rights, the government is expressly prohibited from interfering in the free exercise of religion, abridging freedom of speech, or interfering in the right to peacefully assemble. There is no “greater good” exception to those prohibitions.

The Bill of Rights was specifically written to protect our individual (not collective) rights. In our system of governance, individuals are to be protected from infringements to our rights by a majority – the mob. Individual rights can only be challenged via due process – and don’t try to tell me that the opinion of Dr. “Gain of Function” Fauci represents due process.

The reality is that no government authority, claiming to represent the needs of the mob, has the authority to restrict our freedoms.

  • Not politicians
  • Not Justices
  • Not law enforcement
  • Not bureaucrats with a god complex

If we allow this nonsense to stand, all sorts of mischief will become possible. Is there any doubt that the that wannabe tyrants would?

  • Restrict freedom of speech to prevent hate speech – with themselves defining what that is
  • Cancel our right to assemble during times of political unrest
  • Infringe on our right to bear arms during periods of elevated crime

Just two years ago, these scenarios would have been unthinkable. But after the pandemic response we’ve seen, it is entirely plausible. And it would all be done for the “greater good.”

Unfortunately, our legal systems have become hopelessly corrupted. We can’t count on the Department of Justice, or even the Supreme Court, to protect our God given rights. We have to fight for those rights ourselves.

We can join that fight through elections, and also through our state governments. Article V gives the states the power to amend the Constitution to fight against ever increasing government overreach. These amendments can limit the topics the federal government can regulate and the issues on which Congress can spend money.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
