Voting with my feet

Published in Blog on February 22, 2022 by Gabriel Fontana

The most rewarding vote of my life was with my feet. I legally became a FL resident in July of 2020 and I haven’t stopped smiling. My only regret is not making the move thirty years sooner. Yes, I love the sunshine state with its palm trees, pelicans, and dolphins.  It is also a tax friendly state that is financially sound having the second lowest debt of all states in the union.

But Florida has so much more to offer.  It’s a safe haven for people who honor law, order, and the constitution.  In fact, Florida’s constitution is very similar to the original constitution our founding fathers wrote.  It’s a state that still respects, promotes, and protects our freedoms.

I love Florida and just like anything you care for, you want to protect it.  I understand the Floridians who are unhappy with the influx of northerners invading their state.  I have seen the signs that read “Ok you have seen Florida, now go home”.  But when people have a choice of living in a state with strong elected leaders versus a state with feckless politicians trained in the political climate of Washington DC; signs are not going to stop them from coming here. I humbly recommend we change the previously mentioned sign to read:

Welcome to The Sunshine State. Don’t try to change Florida, Let Florida change you!

Florida is a strong and successful state and to keep it, we need to reach, teach and activate. America is in trouble with career politicians ignoring our Constitution.  In fact, our founding fathers foresaw this and gave us Article V of the Constitution providing the states a way to propose and pass amendments to the Constitution.

I found a way to help my state and my country through choosing a role with the Convention of States.  I was attracted to their simple and yet powerful platform:

  1. Impose fiscal restraints on the federal government.
  2. Limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
  3. Term limits on Congress and federal officials.

These are 3 goals I think we can all agree on and we can make this happen.  Thirty-four states are needed to call the convention and we are halfway there.

I am asking that you too join the grass roots movement and engage as a self governing citizen. If you are a snowbird to Florida you can help by signing the petition. Using your address the petition is sent to your local state representative.

Fellow Floridians, you might ask why sign now if Florida is already a member of the Convention of States?  Because numbers matter when we show our Legislators the amount of petition signors in their district.  One hundred and seventy thousand of the 20 million voter aged Floridians have signed the petition.  Let’s send a message to our state legislatures that we are serious about this effort by exponentially increasing our numbers.

I ask you to help Florida and save America by supporting the Convention of States by signing the petition and choose a role under the “take action” tab.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
