In January 2023, Tucker Carlson interviewed Convention of States Action president and co-founder Mark Meckler for an episode of "Tucker Carlson Today" that deserves another look in light of President-elect Donald Trump's triumph earlier this month.
In that interview, Carlson examined how Trump shook up the status quo of Washington, D.C., during his term and noted that an Article V convention would be a continuation of that sort of "shock to the system" that reflects the "voice of the people."
That discussion now takes on added significance not only because Trump has been re-elected with a clear mandate from the people that Washington has failed us, but because the Article V movement is moving further into the national discussion.
As has been documented here and elsewhere, COS endorsers and supporters have been nominated and appointed to significant posts in the incoming administration. While exciting, it does not change the fact that the necessary structural change must still come from the states in order to re-establish the proper balance of power.
We have borne witness that any amount of good done by one administration can be swiftly undone by the next.
Indeed, as Mark points out about an Article V convention: “Congress has no say. The President has no say. The courts have no say. This was put in the Constitution specifically to allow people like us to wire around DC. The point was DC might break someday, and it might not be responsive to the people, and we might have to do something about that. So that's why this provision of Article V was put in there.”
This wide-ranging interview is also a great way to reacquaint yourself with Mark's story, the beginnings of the Article V movement, the fundamentals of calling an Article V convention, and the power of the grassroots to effect real political change in the United States.
