The road ahead for COS in 2025

Published in Blog on January 02, 2025 by Matt May

Happy New Year from Convention of States!

Each new year brings with it a sense of renewal and promise, particularly this year.

As Convention of States Action president and co-founder Mark Meckler said: "I’m full of hope for 2025. It seems like the whole country is hopeful right now."

All of us affiliated with COS are full of hope for the new year as well. Last year proved very successful for COS, as this video demonstrates:

But in Meckler's view, 2025 can be momentous for the movement to not only call an Article V convention to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, but to be prepared for one.

"I expect 2025 to be a big year in the legislatures for COS," he said. "In addition to passing the COS resolution in multiple states, I expect that our 34 Ready program will continue to experience success as states pass legislation dealing with how they will select Article V convention commissioners and providing additional control mechanisms over their commissioners. It’s going to be exciting!"

Exciting certainly describes the feeling surrounding the influx of friends of COS who have been nominated to serve in significant offices in the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

"Unexpectedly, we see big support at the level of the incoming presidential administration," said Meckler. "Endorsers and supporters include Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, Mike Huckabee, and Karoline Leavitt, just to name a few. With all that support at such a high level, it’s plausible that we’ll even see an open endorsement from President Trump."

While that support and potential is indeed thrilling, it is incumbent upon the grassroots to stay focused and build upon COS becoming a more prominent part of the national discussion. It is the states -- not the executive branch -- who must agree to a convention, and only 15 more states are needed to do so.

The work begins in earnest with the annual COS Surge event in several state capitols getting underway, during which the grassroots volunteers demonstrate their support of an Article V convention while establishing and re-establishing vital and productive relationships with state legislators who may not grasp the fundamentals of the Article V effort and their role in checking Washington, D.C.

"The upcoming Surge event in your state is a great way to meet and deepen your relationship with legislators," said COSA Chief Grassroots Officer Mike Ruthenberg. "Many state lawmakers don’t understand their duty to reel in an out of control federal government."

Ruthenberg is optimistic about what the new year will bring for COS and our country.

"I have high expectations for 2025," he said. "The culture in America is shifting away from the path toward socialism. We The People of COS have a great opportunity to make permanent the changes necessary to safeguard the future of our nation."

"Hold onto your hats," says Meckler, "it’s going to be quite a year for COS."

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
