Americans might have been be forgiven for hoping that Congress would -- just this once -- not include billions of pork-barrel spending in the latest COVID omnibus bill. Millions of Americans are struggling with health and financial crises, and Congress had a chance to prove that they care more about helping their constituents than giving handouts to their favorite special interest and political groups.
As you've probably heard, those hopes were dashed in disgusting fashion. The COVID-19 "relief" bill includes spending items for countless issues that have nothing to do with the pandemic. The bill wastes taxpayer money on everything under the sun while our country continues to rack up trillions in debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay off.
Here are five of the worst spending items in the legislation:
$25 Million for Pakistan: "Of the funds appropriated under title III of the Act that are made available for assistance for Pakistan, not less than $15,000,000 shall be made available for democracy programs and not less than $10,000,000 shall be made available for gender programs."
Money for Historians: Funds for "Resource Study of Springfield (Illinois) Race Riot." That riot occurred in 1908.
Don't Burn Down the House!: There's actually a commission tasked with educating “consumers about the dangers associated with using or storing portable fuel containers for flammable liquids near an open flame."
Kennedy Center Gets Its Allowance: Another $40 million will be allocated "for the necessary expenses for the operation, maintenance and security" of The Kennedy Center, which received $25 million in another COVID-19 relief bill earlier this year. Also in a related story, the Kennedy Center has been closed.
Millions for Random Countries Around the World: $86 million for assistance to Cambodia; $130 million to Nepal, $135 million to Burma, $453 million to Ukraine, $700 million to Sudan.
H/T The Hill
It's hard to believe Congress can be this irresponsible. Or, maybe it isn't. Our elected leaders have for years wasted our hard-earned taxpayer dollars on projects and initiatives that do nothing to serve We the People. It's time for a change in D.C., and a Convention of States is the best way to make it happen.
An Article V Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that force Congress to be fiscally responsible. These amendments, for example, can mandate a balanced budget without raising spending or taxes. Such amendments would compel Congress to cut wasteful, unnecessary, and duplicative programs and spend on only the essential functions of the federal government.
After a Convention of States, Pakistan can say goodbye to its funding for gender studies. The federal government will only be allowed to spend money on things approved by We the People, and our nation will finally start down the road towards fiscal security.
