Between opposing political parties and other divisive forms of identity politics, common ground is growing with new data showing a wide array of support for an Article V Convention of States across party lines.
Data from The Trafalgar Group – one of America's most trusted and accurate pollsters in 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021 – finds that Americans are uniting on the Article V approach to addressing ineffective, wasteful government.
Likely voters were asked if they would support a Convention of States to meet and propose Constitutional Amendments focusing on term limits for Congress and federal officials, federal spending restraints, and limiting the federal government to its constitutionally mandated authority.
The results found that over 80% of Republicans support holding an Article V convention. Just 6.7% said they were opposed to a convention to address government abuses, putting establishment Republicans who have spoken against the solution in the fringe minority.
Notably, the majority of Democrats would also support a convention, further validating the idea that this is a universal issue. Just a quarter of Democrat voters said they would oppose holding a convention while over 50% said they were in favor of a Convention of States.
There’s not one reason any politician that has Americans’ interests at heart would be opposed to fixing the federal government’s excessive power and spending by using the constitutional solution written by the Founding Fathers. Those who oppose the Convention of States solution have revealed their untrustworthy and unaccountable characters to their own constituents.
“Voters in all parties know that—regardless of who is in power—Washington, DC is fundamentally broken and something dramatic has to be done to change the game. The deck is stacked against the American people, and these numbers show vast majorities agree it’s time to reboot the relationship between the federal government and the states,” said Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States Action.
When it comes to today’s divided nation, it’s hard to think of what issue nearly everyone can get behind. This incredible unification can and must be used to rein in overreaching federal government.
