Our founding on Judeo-Christian principles is no longer automatically considered either good or a foregone conclusion. There are those who believe this phrase is divisive because it excludes atheists and Muslims, but do they really understand the term?
“The United States of America is the only country in history to have defined itself as Judeo-Christian. … the Christians who founded America saw themselves as heirs to the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, as much as to the New. And even more importantly, they strongly identified with the Jews.” Prager University
Daniel Lapin, an Orthodox rabbi defined Judeo-Christian values as “those values that are held commonly by Judaism and Christianity.” For him, these include the ideas that “wisdom comes from an external source rather than from our hearts” and that “the nuclear family is the fundamental unit of society.”
Rabbi Boteach said that Judeo-Christian values “are universal principles that form the basis of modern civilization,” adding that the term can apply to the values of some Muslims, atheists, and people of other religions.
Any Florida COS volunteer who attends a meeting lead by State Director, Denah Butts, is regularly reminded about our purposes. We recognize the difference between the primary COS goal to call a Convention of States and our mission to build an engaged army of self-governing grassroots activists. COS also has an aspirational goal to inspire a political and spiritual awakening in America.
We seem to be in a time and place when it’s acceptable for anyone to protest anything in the most outrageous or violent ways. Intolerance for opposing views is encouraged, not demeaned. Being inhibited by belief in a higher spiritual authority or respect for civil society is naïve or passé.
Our COS spiritual reawakening centers around not denying but celebrating God’s presence in our country’s beginning. Judeo-Christian values drove our God-given rights into the constitution. We have freedom of religion because of these principles.
Separation of church and state was NOT written into our constitution to remove religion from governance. It was intended to keep the government from dictating to the churches. According to Director Butts, “We do want God in our politics, we just don’t want politics in our churches. These founding principles held us together and we want to keep it that way."
We are still working to achieve a more perfect union, domestic tranquility, and the blessings of liberty. We believe that all men are created equal and that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.
Please join us both politically and spiritually in activating our founding values.
