A federal court in a unanimous vote last week blocked a Biden mandate that would penalize Catholic doctors for refusing to perform transgender surgery.
Several Catholic entities– including a religious order, several medical clinics, and a university– challenged the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, under which the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) could compel them “to perform and provide insurance coverage for gender transitions”.
Originally, the mandate refused “blanket religious exemption,” potentially forcing doctors to violate their conscience as well as their Hippocratic Oath.
In a major victory setting an important precedent for religious liberty, the court ruled that the right of conscience should not be denied these institutions.
Under the condition that these clinics remain members of the Catholic Benefits Association, they reserve the right to refuse mutilative surgeries.
“The federal government has no business forcing doctors to violate their consciences or perform controversial procedures that could permanently harm their patients,” Attorney Luke Goodrich, who represented these Catholic groups, said in a statement.
The right to carry out your profession without the violation of your own conscience is vital to a free people and a functional society.
Religious freedom protects the right of every citizen to stand under the law of God rather than man.
Without this protection, the state becomes god.
And not a kind one either.
While the federal court last week upheld the rights of the American people, there is another way to ensure that federal infringement does not take away your right to conscience tomorrow.
If you think your right of conscience should not be squashed by federal whims, join us today in calling for an Article V Convention of States.
