Recently we were introduced to Jan Petri, a new Content Writer for Convention of States.
In his article “New, Eager and Clueless," he writes that many who have joined COS are “new, eager, and clueless to political activism.” I want to thank Jan for his observations and insight. As a new volunteer I felt his article got to the heart of the matter.
This past year I have hovered on the outskirts of COS as an observer, not sure what impact I could make in this crazy world of politics. But several weeks ago I decided to reach out and volunteer.
Within a few days, State Communications Coordinator Nancy Suits contacted me. She was so encouraging.
As a new volunteer Content Writer, I wanted to research, read, and learn more about COS. She directed me to COS University where I found a tremendous amount of information about the mission to call a Convention of States using Article V of our Constitution. I thought to myself, “It just makes sense. This is doable.”
To begin my COS journey, I met with Regional Captain Lynette Miesen from Niceville. Not only did she introduce me to a wonderful new lunch/coffee café, but she provided me with material I could read and share with others that clearly outlines the goals and mission of COS.
I asked Lynette what she thought was the biggest challenge facing the organization. She felt it was educating the public and legislators about using Article V to address the federal government’s overreach, term limits, and fiscal responsibility.
I found her insight most helpful. It will push me to learn and digest my COS homework, so I can confidently share it with my friends who are frustrated that the federal government is running amuck and feel there are no answers.
To quote Jan’s article again, “absolute power corrupts absolutely,” and “people who get a taste of power tend to want more.” I am convinced after watching videos and reading through the material that the use of Article V calling for a Convention of States is the way for We the People to move forward.
I am encouraged to know that I do not have to be an expert in all the matters of COS. I want to make his article’s closing my personal goals as a COS volunteer: reach, teach, and activate.
Is it time for you to step out and meet the team? One goal is to activate a District Captain in all 120 House Districts in Florida.
