‘Power is vested in the people’; Former Congressman Dr. Dave Brat endorses COS

Published in Blog on December 14, 2022 by Jakob Fay

Former U.S. Representative Dr. Dave Brat, who represented Virginia’s 7th District from 2014-2019, has officially endorsed Convention of States Action and is urging fellow freedom fighters to do the same.

After his two-term tenure in the D.C. Swamp, Dr. Brat knows full well just how corrupt, bloated, and unproductive our national government is. “Few people today question the reality of government overspending, entrenched political power, and regulatory overreach that encroach on the liberties guaranteed in the United States Constitution,” he said in his COS endorsement.

“I served for four years in Congress, and I saw firsthand just how easily powerful politicians can ignore Constitutional limits and pass laws that favor their preferred agenda or constituency. I heard from many of my own constituents how frustrating it is to feel as though their votes (even for conservatives like me) really don’t matter anymore.”

He goes on to explain that he realized the only way to rein in our runaway federal government is to use the tools the Founders left us in the Constitution. Read the rest of Dr. Brat’s statement below:

“I have a profound respect for the American Constitution, and for the brave men who framed that document to guarantee personal liberty, and preserve this Republic. The unique feature of our Constitution is the fact that power is vested in the people, who are to control the government, not the other way around.

We have strayed far from the original bounds of the Constitution. That is why a process to amend it was outlined in Article Five. Congress can propose amendments if passed by two thirds of both Houses; and those amendments must be ratified by three fourths of the states to become part of the Constitution.

Virginian George Mason saw fit to add a second method of amendment in case the Congress ever got out of hand and started protecting themselves and their political power. That second provision is called a Convention of the States, and it has never been actually used to pass an amendment.

The process is strictly controlled and laid out plainly in Article Five. Two thirds of the State legislatures must pass a resolution to hold a convention of states, and submit those applications to Congress. Once Congress receives identical applications from the required number of states, Article Five says, “Congress shall call a convention of states for proposing amendments.”

I believe we have now come to the time when this last resort of the people should be deployed. I have joined millions of other Americans who have signed a petition asking our legislature to pass a resolution to call for a convention of states to propose amendments to the Constitution on the subjects of Federal overreach, fiscal responsibility, and term limits.

The continuing effort by Convention of States Action has now succeeded in getting their proposed resolution passed in nineteen states, with at least ten others currently considering it. I know this has been a long hard struggle, and we still have many hurdles to overcome to reach the goal. History teaches us that the battle is not always won by the strongest but by the most persistent. I am thankful for everyone who is working to return our government to its intended bounds; and I hope each of you will join me in becoming part of this growing effort.”

We are honored to lock shields with former Congressman Dr. Dave Brat in the fight to save America and call history’s first Article V Convention of States. Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
