Exodus 14:8 “The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he pursued the Israelites, as they were leaving confidently and defiantly.”
The children of Israel had been slaves to their Egyptian masters for many years. God had worked a mighty deliverance for them and because of the miracles God did in their eyes to accomplish that deliverance they left “confidently and defiantly.”
This might sound “un-Christian,” to leave "confidently and defiantly," but the apostle Paul tells us in Romans 13:3 that, “rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil.” And when they become the opposite, again we see by the example of the apostles, non-compliance is the only option, Acts 4:18-20: “They [the rulers] called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, 'Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to Him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.'”
Confident defiance was not out of the question for the founding fathers of our faith nor was it for the founding fathers of our nation!
Not only does scripture admonish us to respond with non-compliance in the face of “rulers” who become a “terror to good works,” but the very foundation of our Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, admonishes us the to do the same: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed....That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”
Have we become too comfortable and "safe" in our culture today? One of our founding fathers and oldest member of the convention that wrote the above statement, Benjamin Franklin, once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Our first President put it like this: “The marvel of all history is the patience with which men and women submit to burdens unnecessarily laid upon them by their governments.”
After over two years of lockdowns, businesses and churches shuttered and the current federal administration pushing for more and more control, patience has been exhausted! It is high time that the American public draws a line in the sand and says “No more!”
We need a swift move by the States in this union to call forth an Article V constitutional convention to push back on our federal government using the legal means left us by our founding fathers!
