It's easy to think that there is no common ground among Americans when it comes to politics.
Because everything seems to have become political, a simplistic formula seems to prevail: You're either on the red team or the blue team, and there's no in-between.
Well, a national poll that has just been released should make people think twice about that. It reveals significant support among Republicans, Democrats, and Independents for an Article V convention to impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, set federal term limits, and impose more limits on federal power.
According to the polling firm Susquehanna Polling and Research Inc. (SP&R), 88 percent of Americans support term limits, 71 percent believe that more limitations upon federal power are necessary, and 68 percent are in favor of a meeting of the states to propose amendments to the Constitution that would establish term limits, impose spending limits, and curb the power of the federal government.
“I’m not surprised by this," said Convention of States Action co-founder and president Mark Meckler. "By a HUGE majority the American people want a less powerful federal government and support an Article V convention to accomplish this goal."
In addition, 59 percent of those polled said that they have more trust in state legislators who live and work nearby than their federal representatives in Washington, D.C.
This is a developing story and we will have more in-depth analysis of the poll results.
As we head to the finish of another divisive election season, there is optimism that Americans from various political perspectives can agree that the power of the federal government must be curtailed and that career politicians must be made to find other outlets for their ambition.
