COSA-FL has its first block walking team assembled and they are already blazing trails through our Florida neighborhoods. Known as the First Fav Four, this group consists of Kay MacQueen, Cliff Gerich, Kelly Robbins, and Dave O'Neil.
Earlier this year, Regional Captain 6 & 7 Kay MacQueen saw a need to start a block walking program. Local COS volunteers had also been expressing similar interest. Luckily, expert advice was just around the corner.
Kay found the inspiration and the key to open doors while attending this year's Leadership Summit in Orlando. Ohio's Andrew Barkman, COS National Block Walking Captain, gave a thorough and engaging training session at the summit. His inspirational approach and a supportive block walking kit showed her the way so she could put a team together and hit the road.
In addition to this training, the COS University also provides aspiring pavement pirates beneficial guidance for block walking strategies.
Regions 6 and 7 began working together and District Captain 52, Cliff Gerich, offered to help lead the way. An enthusiastic and experienced block walker, he had met his calling for spreading the word door to door and first set out to do so in Michigan and Iowa. He then returned with a treasure trove of knowledge to share.
Team members learned about writing and following a script, how to mark the log, and what rack cards to leave for those not home or unavailable.
COSA Florida's motto of Reach - Teach - Activate was put into practice by these four trail-blazing volunteers. With Florida being a Passed State, it is important that we keep the interest and support alive and block walking is an excellent means for doing that.
The First Fav Four and more volunteers to come, are opening doors with tested strategies that work. And they had a great time doing what they love, which is supporting and advocating for an Article V Convention of States!
