Laurie Nienhaus lived on Fort Myers Beach and stayed to watch hurricane Ian destroy her neighborhood. Fortunately, she and husband Ken were on the second floor as the storm surge crushed nearby single-story homes, and floated trucks and cars into a trash heap.
Amazingly enough, Laurie joined us at the COS Leadership Summit just one week later. With husband Ken's blessing and his determination to stand guard over their dog, Ruby, cat, Joey, and their remaining belongings, Laurie felt called to continue developing her connection with COS. Before finding COS on Twitter Laurie felt herself losing hope for our country. The COS website impressed her enough to generate that one very important click to volunteer.
Like many other COS volunteers, Laurie hosted a Constitution Day gathering. Surprisingly it was totally coincidental that her previously scheduled presentation happened on September 17th.
As a new District Captain Laurie was looking for any opportunity to share her enthusiasm for COS. All volunteers use the skills they bring to COS and one of Laurie’s many talents is public speaking. She signed up intending to be a content writer but was recruited to the larger DC role by her Regional Director Rick Mikluscak.
Laurie rehearsed the approved COS Constitution presentation as the basis for her program but she added her own apple tart treats and citizenship questions to insure audience engagement. Of the 20 plus attendees, five or six want to work with her as volunteers on future projects. That’s an excellent return!
Most COS folks, like Laurie, are hardy warriors who have experience dealing with adversity. Life strengthens us through practice conquering illness, accidents, and a variety of other traumatic challenges to us and to our loved ones. Laurie is a natural researcher and student who became a licensed Quantum Energetics Structured Therapy (QEST) therapist to help people deal with intractable pain. With Laurie, many COS people share the knowledge that God strengthens and comforts us on our journey.
Undeterred by the seemingly insurmountable tasks ahead, Laurie already describes plans to contact her local Florida representatives to share what she learned at the Summit. She describes herself as an idea person and her creativity is obvious from books, plays, and projects highlighted on her website.
Already a polished presenter, Laurie’s goal is to become a COS speaker. Obviously, given the damage to her home, she will need some time to reconsider her COS roles and plans to build a local COS team in an area destroyed by Ian. On the bright side, she says she may now have more time to focus on her COS writing.
We are so blessed to observe and benefit from the courage of patriots like Laurie. If we are molded by the company we keep, there is no better congregation to mingle with than COS. COS believes that a return to federalism through term limits, fiscal restraint, and less federal overreach will get our country back on the path to liberty and justice for all.
COS needs and values volunteers who help in person as well as from home as Tele-patriots or prayer and social media warriors. You will be uplifted and hopeful when you join us.
