Convention of States is winning.
Indiana governor Mike Braun, who recently became an official endorser of Convention of States, has signed 34|Ready model legislation into law.
Governor Braun signed Senate Bill (SB) 450 on April 9. The bill draws the parameters for the appointment of commissioners to an Article V convention, including residency requirements and instructions for those commissioners.
SB 450 passed the Indiana House of Representatives on March 24 by a vote of 69-27. The bill had earlier passed the Senate on February 10. It was co-sponsored by Rep. Chris Jeter and Rep. Dave Hall.
"Our 34|Ready model legislation puts procedures in place that would be needed for a state to participate in any Article V convention," said Convention of States Action Legislative Associate Paul Phillips
"It details the procedures legislators are concerned about and gives a sense of security by establishing codified safeguards against and penalties for unfaithful commissioners.”
In February 2016, Indiana became the sixth state to approve a COS resolution calling for a limited-purpose Article V convention to discuss and propose amendments to “impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limit the terms of office for its officials and for members of Congress”.
Governor Braun's signature on SB 450 is indicative of his willingness not just to endorse COS, but to be proactive on behalf of the movement to call an Article V convention. It’s also an appropriate coda to the continued and dedicated effort of the Hoosier grassroots, who have gone above and beyond in seeing 34|Ready model legislation become law in Indiana.
The codification of SB 450 solidifies Indiana’s commitment to calling an Article V convention that will reduce the size and scope of the federal government. It aligns with the overwhelming majority of Hoosiers who believe that they can best decide how to govern themselves.
It also signals once again that Convention of States is continuously and successfully on the move.
