House Republicans refuse to cave to Democrats spending spree

Published in Blog on May 03, 2023 by Brianna Kraemer

House Democrats and Republicans are showing an area of deep divide: federal spending.

The nation is weeks away from reaching the current debt ceiling, which must increase if the government wants to continue paying its bills.

Standing united behind Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Republicans say the debt limit can increase only if spending cuts are enacted. Spending caps would permit reform, new work requirements for social programs, and other financial constraints.

On the other hand, Democrats don't want to burden themselves with spending cuts. They want to continue to have free access to imaginary money pulled out of thin air.

But in all honesty, no politician "representing" their people would ever manage their personal finances the way they manage the nation's money.

In a dream, we would all love to keep swiping a credit card and never acknowledge the accumulating tab. But turning away from our personal bills is not possible in reality.

One week from today, after more negotiations behind the scenes, McCarthy and Biden will meet to discuss debt-limit options. In the meantime, the mainstream media is sounding the alarm on spending caps.

"The government may not be able to pay its bills as soon as June 1. If Congress doesn’t allow the U.S. to borrow more money, it would cause economic catastrophe," The Washington Post reports in a frightening manner.

Who knew financial responsibility at the national level was controversial? Definitely not Convention of States.

The Post goes on to report that "Democrats want to raise it without conditions, like Congress did under President Donald Trump."

The fact is, it doesn't matter who is in office. The $32 trillion national debt is unsustainable. Just a little economic understanding should tell most people this is not how you keep a country alive long-term.

Unrestrained spending is self-centered and opportunistic; it's a lack of consideration for the future but rather a temporary convenience. Washington bureaucrats need to be reminded it's not all about them. We the People exist outside of their bubbles and we're going to implement change through Convention of States.

We will force budget requirements on the federal government through Article V of the Constitution. Please sign the COS petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
