Freedom is a risky business

Published in Blog on September 05, 2020 by Joe Mavilia

When you are free to enjoy the liberty that is only available in America, you take chances. But they are your choices, and we don’t kowtow to dictators inside our borders.

You rock climb, sky dive, hang glide, bungee jump, race cars and motorcycles, hill climb, ski, and all other manner of dangerous things.

About 150 years ago, pioneers began to move west from the established cities and towns where it was relatively safe. But there were mountains to be climbed, gold to be discovered, and the word of the day was, “Go west young man”.

And they did. Those times were adventuresome but dangerous. Many died in the pursuit of the unknown.

It was a brave new world where people didn’t shrink from a fear that those adventures could kill them. They embraced the challenge and followed the words of Longfellow. He wrote, “Let us then be up and doing with a heart for any fate, still pursuing, still achieving, learn to labor and to wait.”

With a stout heart they made their own decisions, which was only possible because of the liberty secured for them by the Founders of this great nation.

Today you can see that same spirit in America. That spirit was discovered in the early days and preserved for all who have followed. It is our duty to pay it forward.

America is replete with people that have a very similar pioneer spirit, because they know we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

It is my contention that average citizens are more intelligent than the self-proclaimed experts in high places and institutions of higher learning. Clearly, well done is better than well said.

A free people left to their own devices seem to be the ones that simply “get ‘er done” with uncommon common sense. Meanwhile, self-absorbed, do-nothing politicians talk a lot from their self-constructed ivory towers.

To them I say, get the hell out of the way and keep your opinions to yourselves. It is becoming clearer every day that your behavior is abhorrently narcissistic pontification. I, for one, am done with such people in government.

Mark Twain was correct when he observed that “Politicians are like diapers. They need to be changed often and for the same reason”.

We the People must take back our country from the ruling elite in Washington. Some in D.C. are trying to drain the swamp, but the executive is limited to two terms of four years, while Congresspeople have nearly unlimited terms.

Thankfully there is a provision in the Constitution under Article V being championed by Convention of States. It is a grassroots effort designed to outlast the corruption and provide constitutional solutions that rein in federal spending, overreach, and congressional terms.

It will take a lot of disinfectant and volunteers to assist the COS in achieving its goals. Join the team. Together, we can grow the supporting states to the 34 needed to convene the convention. We can do this with your help.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
