Many Floridians want to engage in defense of their country but wish to do so from a place where they are comfortable. That engagement can be with our school aged children and grandchildren. These experienced patriots can inform the next generation on a topic they already know a lot about through careers and life experiences. The topic is our constitution, citizenship, and the civic duties needed to carry on the legacy of liberty.
Constitution week is September 17 – 23.
What Floridians sometimes lack is the forum and guidance of an organization such as COS to help them help our state. It is through the COS mechanism, specifically the Education Coalition, that they can passionately educate, enlighten, and enable younger generations to take hold of our Republic and ensure our rights and freedoms continue.
The Education Coalition is a relatively new Convention of States team formed as a direct result of multiple needs. Parents' interest in curriculum and school board policies, citizens' desire to support the Republic, teacher shortages, and a state of Florida law requiring civics education all drive this initiative.
Governor Ron DeSantis Signed Legislation to Set the Pace for Civics Education in America.
House Bill 5 requires the Florida Department of Education to create an integrated K-12 civic education curriculum that includes an understanding of citizens’ shared rights and responsibilities under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Rather than have civics education perceived as an unfunded mandate and additional burden on teachers the Education Coalition is working with COS and state leaders to satisfy identified needs.
As a veteran and educator himself, Coalition Director Len Fritz hopes to organize a contingent of experienced patriots who will enthusiastically augment civics education efforts in local school systems.
The COS Education Coalition plans to recruit and train volunteers using curricula and lesson plans already approved by the Florida Department of Education. COS volunteers who are prepared to share civics lessons in middle and secondary level classrooms will connect to local school officials through their Regional or District Captains.
Whether or not you have officially sworn an oath to defend the constitution, your head and heart may be telling you it is time to do something to prevent the ruin of your country.
One thing we can all do is reinforce our founding principles and recognize that without our personal effort and commitment those values will be forgotten and replaced.
COS University offers a great place to start your refresher courses and strengthen your skills as a COS volunteer. The curricula at Hillsdale College and ICivics are among other FL DOE approved resources.
