Donald Trump sues federal government over FBI raid

Published in Blog on August 22, 2022 by Jakob Fay

On Monday, Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against the federal government requesting materials seized from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home not be read until reviewed by a court official. This “special master” (most likely a former judge or lawyer) would examine the seized documents to determine if any were “not within the scope of the Search Warrant.” Additionally, the lawsuit requests that any item deemed to have been taken outside the purview of the warrant be returned.

“Politics cannot be allowed to impact the administration of justice,” the lawsuit points out. “Law enforcement is a shield that protects Americans. It cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes."

According to the lawsuit, “the Government has refused to provide President Trump with any reason for the unprecedented, general search of his home. To date, the Government has failed to legitimize its historic decision to raid the home of a President who had been fully cooperative. Instead, faced with public backlash, the Attorney General has taken the unheard-of step of announcing at a press conference that he was willing to release portions of a sealed search warrant application. Government leaks to favored media outlets have provided ever-changing, and inaccurate, “justifications” for the politicized conduct of the FBI and Department of Justice (“DOJ’’). These unsupported ‘justifications’ by anonymous sources hint at a breakdown in communications between President Trump’s representatives and the Government, or that there developed a need to obtain a search warrant. The actual chronology of events clearly establishes that there was no “exigency” for a forceful raid and there is no basis for keeping information about the raid from the public.”

The FBI has a long history of taking unethical or questionable action against political dissidents or opponents of the federal government, and this is not the first time the bureau has controversially “investigated” Trump. During his 2016 presidential campaign, for example, the FBI wiretapped Trump’s campaign. Considering the poor reputation the agency has developed for itself, it’s no surprise a majority of both Independents and Republicans believe the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago was politically motivated.

Time and time again the FBI has proven it won’t hesitate to weaponize itself, not in pursuit of justice, but against political opponents. That’s why the Convention of States Project is fighting back. Convention of States has launched an effort to end the FBI and is also pursuing the long-term solution of draining the DC Swamp, ending the deep state, and bringing accountability to Washington, once and for all.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
