Calling all COS grassroots activists!
State party platforms serve as a reflection of our identity and values. Therefore, it's incumbent upon each of us, as grassroots activists at the state level, to actively advocate for the inclusion of support for Convention of States within our respective party platforms.
Over the past decade, a number of states, including Texas, Maine, Iowa, Hawaii, Kansas, and several others, have formally signaled their support for COS.
“The Republican Party of Hawai’i supports… Convention of States: imposing fiscal restraints on government spending, limiting government power and jurisdiction and imposing term limits on all its officials,” the Aloha State’s GOP party platform stated.
“We support the Convention of States Project application which seeks to call an Article V convention,” echoed Maine.
This often underestimated stage in the legislative process holds significant importance for garnering support for COS in state legislatures. When a political party embraces COS, it lends credibility to our resolution, potentially motivating legislators to endorse our endeavors. Though not mandatory, it raises awareness about the widespread backing behind COS.
As engaged citizen activists, we hold the power to sway our states to acknowledge COS. For instance, in Texas, grassroots proponents mobilized at the Texas GOP Convention in 2018, successfully thwarting “multiple attempts to remove the pro-Article V plank and replace it with a rescission plank.” Similarly, a volunteer in Maine took the lead in securing an official endorsement from the Maine Republican Party.
So, what about your state? Has your state endorsed COS yet? If not, it’s time to get to work!
Together, we can elevate Article V and ensure that legislators everywhere feel the pressure to call an Article V convention.
