Several members of the Convention of States Hawaii team attended the 2018 Hawaii Republican Party State Convention, Some as delegates and others as display table volunteers.
After more than two years of hard work by Convention of States Hawaii team members, the Hawaii Republican Party now officially endorses Convention of States in its party platform.
The party adopted a Convention of States resolution in 2017, but the Convention of States Hawaii team didn't stop there. Since then, COS supporters on the Platform Committee worked tirelessly to include Article V language in a new party platform that was to be presented for approval at the 2018 State Convention, held on May 3 on Oahu.
Yet, just days before this year's convention a final streamlined revision of the platform eliminated the Convention of States language and other statements of conservative principles. The Hawaii team quickly sprang into action and from the floor of the convention made a motion to insert an endorsement for a Convention of States back into the party's platform. The motion carried and was overwhelmingly approved by the 207 participating delegates.
The party's new platform was published on line on the Hawaii GOP website GOPHawaii.com on Thursday, June 14, 2018. The endorsement can be found in the "Government" section of the platform and reads as follows:
"The Republican Party of Hawai’i supports the Convention of States: imposing fiscal restraints on government spending, limiting government power and jurisdiction and imposing term limits on all its officials."
With this publication, Hawaii joins six other states whose published GOP party platform includes a statement supporting Convention of States or an Article V convention.
