This week on his nationwide pro-police tour, Governor Ron DeSantis warned against sending blank checks to Ukraine without clearly defining the purpose of America’s involvement in the war with Russia. As we approach the one-year anniversary of Vladamir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and as the United States government continues to commit billions of dollars in support to President Zelinsky, the popular governor urged the Biden administration to “identify what is the strategic objective that they’re trying to achieve.”
“They have, effectively, a blank-check policy with no clear strategic objective identified…. just saying it’s an open-ended, blank check… is not acceptable,” DeSantis stated.
Additionally, he warned that, in his opinion, China is much more of a serious threat to the United States than Russia is. He cautioned that the Biden administration’s ill-conceived involvement in the conflict may suck us into a proxy war with China, which has signaled its support for Russia.

In 2022 alone, the U.S. government sent an estimated $50 billion to support Ukraine. During his surprise visit to Kyiv (Ukraine’s capital) early this week, Biden pledged an additional $500 million in military aid.
Polling from October revealed that Americans were wary of sending too much money to Ukraine, although they were generally united in the belief that America should help Ukraine defeat Putin. According to The Trafalgar Group, 40.3 percent of voters said the U.S. should continue to send weapons and money to aid Ukraine; 30.5 percent said we should send weapons, but no money. The same poll also discovered that, in light of America’s level of commitment to Ukraine, a majority of voters did not believe NATO and other European countries were doing their fair share.
“Americans want to continue to help Ukraine defeat Putin, but when you look at the numbers, less than half of voters think that U.S. assistance should include sending more money to Ukraine,” said the President of Convention of States, Mark Meckler. “Voters believe the U.S. is shouldering the burden of supporting Ukraine and seem to be questioning why we are sending billions overseas while our own economy slides deeper into recession. Our nation would benefit from hearing President Biden provide a clearly defined mission and role in the U.S. support to Ukraine, and reassurances that this will not just become a never-ending conflict that drains American resources and skyrockets our nation’s debt.”
At least part of voters’ hesitancy to keep providing financial aid stems from reports that the money is actually just ending up back in the hands of corrupt politicians. Many have pushed for more oversight of the money being sent to Ukraine, a notoriously corrupt country. Several U.S. senators, for example, signed a letter urging the Biden administration to provide more details on how the money is being used.
Unfortunately, our government’s response to the war in Ukraine is yet another example of how they have disregarded the American people. With our national debt at over $30 trillion and no end in sight to how much this current administration will give away freely, it has never been more important for We the People to rein in the federal government through an Article V Convention of States.
