Dwelling on a tragedy is not generally recommended for good mental health. We are advised to think of positive events and happy memories, to focus on the future, and to live in the present. Why then, remember the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor?
Obviously, we want to respect and honor our heroes, and appreciate the sacrifice made by more than 2,400 families. At the time of Japan’s surprise attack, Americans were conflicted about joining or supporting another European war. This single act of aggression united social and political leaders in defense of our country. Instead of lifting economic sanctions, the attack achieved the opposite of what the Japanese were hoping for.
Experts at history.com have pointed out that the attack could have been worse. All of the Pacific fleet’s submarines and aircraft carriers were away from the base. Oil storage, repair shops and shipyards were also untouched. Distribution of assets, or not keeping all our eggs in one basket, still rings true.
In The Leader Maker , Douglas R. Satterfield identifies some lessons that apply not only to world politics, but also to the agenda of COS. Think of how his warnings can help us achieve an Article V convention:
- Do not underestimate your enemy – Plan ahead for media attacks.
- Unity is a powerful force – Maintain contact with your COS colleagues, attend meetings, support projects.
- Signs of trouble are there to see – Keep an open mind and don’t ignore the objections of adversaries.
Kellar Ellsworth at Pearlharbor.org points out these other lessons that we can apply to our COS activities:
- Vigilance - Even when there does not appear to be a threat, we must accept the fact that evil exists.
- Resource Utilization – Sharing information with like-minded organizations and helping other states prepare for their Article V resolution will strengthen COS as a whole.
- Tragedy Unites Us – small defeats can inspire us just as much as major setbacks. The underwhelming performance of conservative candidates in the 2022 midterms does not compare to 9/11 nor Pearl Harbor, but it may inspire us to work harder on our common goal.
Patriots who defended our liberty in 1941 were challenged by an overt physical enemy. Patriots in 2022 are fighting a very subtle undermining of American values and principles.

Let's continue the most worthy American traditions of preserving personal freedom and individual responsibility by taking action in our own way. Help us prevent another tragedy.
