Two state lawmakers pen op-ed about Convention of States rally in Raleigh

Published in Blog on May 16, 2024 by Jakob Fay

Two days before the monumental Convention of States rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, Senator Tim Moffitt and Representative Dennis Riddell took to The Carolina Journal to voice their support for the grassroots event.

“The movement to have North Carolina join other states in exercising the call for an Article V Convention to propose amendments to the US Constitution has been brewing steadily in our state legislature since 2013,” they observed.

Branding themselves as “consistent supporters and sponsors” of the COS resolution, the duo laid out several key factors that render the Article V convention imperative.

Firstly, they noted, the process is constitutional: “This is not a new doctrine or novel idea,” they asserted. “It has been part of the original Constitution from the beginning and sits there in Article V just waiting to be exercised. The founders knew the future would present matters that would reveal the necessity of making changes to the document they crafted.

Next, they added, the Article V convention process was “put in place for a time such as this.”

“Congress over many decades with either party in control has managed to simultaneously kick the can down the road and paint themselves into a corner. They have no plan for balancing their budget and paying down our huge national debt of over $34 trillion. If they cut spending, they will likely feel the wrath of every special interest group in the country. If they raise taxes they will just as likely feel the wrath of every taxpayer. What shall they do?”

Thirdly, they pointed out that the convention method allows the states to intervene to save the American Republic.

“We have to act before the self-destructive behavior of the federal government takes everything down with it,” they wrote. “Just as a family will come together and intervene in the life of a drug-addled beloved family member, so we the states must intervene to save our [much-beloved] nation from [self-destruction] by its addiction to deficit spending and expansive federal power.”

Finally, Sen. Moffitt and Rep. Riddell stated that “this is a rare opportunity for a long overdue, yet wonderful, national and statewide civics lesson on what exactly should be the size, cost, and role of government in our lives. Our NC Constitution, in Article 1 Section 35, reads ‘a frequent recurrence to fundamental principles is absolutely necessary to preserve the blessings of liberty.’ Friends, it is time we ‘recur’ and in a serious way.

The North Carolina rally, one of the biggest COS events of the year, represented the growing grassroots momentum behind the call for an Article V convention. Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
