Convention of States North Carolina to rally May 15, 2024: It’s time for NC to become the 20th state and help rein in an out-of-control Federal Government!

Published in Blog on March 10, 2024 by Jeff Groh

Does anyone believe that our $34.5T in debt is sustainable? Even more important than the debt, is the debt-to-GDP ratio which is well over 100% for the first time since WWII.

Our Founders loathed debt. Thomas Jefferson considered “public debt as the greatest dangers to be feared.”

The national debt is a moral issue as we are saddling future generations with paying off that debt, lowering standards of living. It is already happening. Over the last several years as the debt has exploded, so has inflation. Inflation is essentially a tax we are all paying as a result of the Federal Government printing money and deficit spending.

As former Senator and Sr. Advisor for COS, Rick Santorum wrote in the Carolina Journal:

“With spending comes power...Washington, DC, will never voluntarily relinquish its own power, no matter who is elected. The only rational conclusion is this: unless some political force outside of Washington, DC, intervenes, the federal government will continue to bankrupt this nation, usurp the legitimate authority of the states, and destroy the liberty of the people.”

The Convention of States Project is a national effort to utilize Article V of the U.S. Constitution to convene a Convention of the States, a tool our Founders provided that allows We the People to bypass Congress to propose amendments that Congress would never do on its own. Those who endorse this effort includes every recognized conservative voice.

A primary goal is to impose fiscal sanity on the Federal Government.

The process requires 34 state legislatures to pass a resolution that defines the scope of the convention. The resolution authorizes the convention to debate amendments on term limits for federal officials, imposing fiscal restraints on, and limiting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government. Any proposed amendment then would need to be ratified by 38 states.

Consider this: Since the NC Senate first considered the COS resolution in 2017, the national debt has risen from $20.2T to $34.5T today, an increase of 71%!

For those in the North Carolina General Assembly who continue to either drag their feet on this issue, or openly oppose the resolution, future generations will not look kindly on your actions. The Founders considered you to be the most powerful legislators in the country. You have the responsibility to act.

The current COS resolution, HJR235, passed the North Carolina House on March 8, 2023. The Senate will consider the resolution in the short session to begin later this spring.

Expectations for passage are high. North Carolina COS volunteers spent thousands of hours planning and executing an historic campaign effort in the 2022 election cycle for pro-COS candidates. Hundreds of volunteers dedicated their time, talents and financial resources.

We did the same thing in the just completed 2024 primary election cycle, working for 15 pro-COS candidates, and campaigning against a former North Carolina legislator running for the Senate who has consistently worked against our efforts when he was in the House, despite claiming to be a constitutional conservative. We expect to support pro-COS candidates in the 2024 general election as well.

On Wednesday May 15, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., COS will hold another large public rally on Halifax Mall at the legislative complex to encourage the Senate to pass the COS resolution and respect the oath they took to support the U.S. Constitution when sworn in to office. And to remind the legislature that we are not going away. We are only getting stronger.

Speakers will include Michael Farris, co-founder of the COS movement, former President of the Alliance Defending Freedom, founder of Patrick Henry College and the Home School Legal Defense Association.

Also speaking will be COS co-founder Mark Meckler

Visit the rally website for more information. All are welcome for this inspiring day. Other national and local speakers are expected and will be announced on the website.
