Michael Farris is Senior Advisor and co-founder of the Convention of States Project. He also serves as general counsel for the National Religious Broadcasters Association.
He is founding president of Home School Legal Defense Association. He is also founding president of Patrick Henry College, where he taught both constitutional law and public international law.
He served as president and CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the world’s premiere defender of religious liberty. During his six years of leadership, ADF served as counsel in nine cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, winning eight victories, including NIFLA v. Becerra – where he personally argued before the court and won a free speech victory for California’s prolife pregnancy centers – and Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case that reversed Roe v. Wade.
Farris has testified many times before the U.S. House and Senate He was an executive committee member of the Coalition for the Free Exercise of Religion that successfully lobbied Congress for the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. He has also been a leading advocate for the sovereignty of the United States with his successful opposition to various U.N. treaties designed to control American domestic policy.
He graduated from Western Washington State College magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science, followed by a Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University (with honors). He also earned an LL.M. in public international law (with honors) from the University of London.
Farris is an ordained Baptist minister, founding pastor of a church, and serves as an elder of Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia.
He has written over fifteen books, including a constitutional law textbook, plus numerous law review articles and countless articles in the popular press.
His work has been recognized by many awards, including the Heritage Foundation’s Salvatori Prize for American Citizenship.
Mike and his wife Vickie live in Purcellville, Virginia, and have ten children and many grandchildren.
