Every year, the U.S. Constitution is shared and celebrated with students in federally funded institutions during the week of September 17th through the 23rd. This period of reverence, known as Constitution Week, is the result of a resolution signed by Congress in 1956 following a petition submitted by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization.
The DAR wanted our nation's citizens, from childhood onward, to understand their own country's unique importance and the significance of its founding laws and principles. By establishing a period of reflection and practice annually, a critical familiarity with the constitution would gradually be achieved.
The Founding Fathers were a group of citizens who came together by divine providence, sensing and moving their imperative actions forward in the development of the greatest nation ever built. Similarly, Convention of States Action Volunteers of Florida came together out of a shared sense of urgency and passion to undertake the responsibility of celebrating the Constitution with Florida's students. They recognized that it too was divine providence that brought them here, not by coincidence but of conscience and spirit. The method and the means to get the ball rolling would come second.
In 2022, Regional Director (then Grassroots Coordinator) Joyce Berry brought Len Fritz on board as Educational Development Director where he has since led the charge. Working with a team of educators, instructors and other professionals over the past year and a half, a formal curriculum with sourced materials was researched, tested and delivered to our volunteers, complete with guidance and training.
With this newly prepared Constitution Week Kit, COSA-FL volunteers delivered the inspiration and understanding of the U.S. Constitution to Florida students last week. Karen Jordan of Region 10, House District 34 made her first Constitution Week presentation at CrossStyle Academy, Vero Beach. Equipped with a Patriot Academy slideshow and an engaging animated video about the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia, PA, it was a great success. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session and free pocket constitutions were handed out for their own keeping, learning and reference.
COSA-FL Volunteers are always learning more about their country's founding and the intents and purposes of the U.S. Constitution. They recognize and emphasize the truth that our constitution it is not just what governs us but what enables us to govern ourselves as individuals in this Republic and its representative form of government. The learning process is never ending, no matter one's age.
We The People are tasked with the duty of education for ourselves, our friends and neighbors and our children. Only through developing our knowledge can we ever hope to persist as a free and harmonious nation where we exercise our rights, engage our representatives and defend this blessed land.
"An active and informed citizenry is necessary to the effective functioning of our constitutional system...All of us have an obligation to study the Constitution and participate actively in the system of self-government it establishes"- David Osterlund 1995
Florida already passed its resolution calling for a Convention therefore our work is centered around reaching - teaching - activating our fellow Floridians. We always welcome new volunteers to grow this grassroots army of like-minded, concerned and motivated citizens. After signing the petition below to show your support for a Convention, sign-up to volunteer here!
