U.S. Representative Russell Fry from South Carolina has officially endorsed Convention of States after previously assisting the grassroots movement during his tenure as a state legislator.
“I write today to express my full support for the Convention of States project,” the congressman stated. “I wholeheartedly believe that federal spending, among other things, is out of control. I believe, as did our founding fathers, that the balance of powers between the branches of government, the states, and the people, as envisioned and outlined in our Constitution, is vital to the preservation of our republic. If the federal government will not act to rein in spending, we have an obligation to do so in the states.”
While Washington, D.C., as a whole, has a vested interest in ensuring that an Article V convention, which poses a threat to its power, is never called, Congressman Fry joins a small but growing number of public servants in Congress, including fellow representatives Eric Burlison, Josh Brecheen, Chip Roy, Tracey Mann, and Ralph Norman, who recognize that the answer to our nation’s problems will never come from within the federal government.
“Our federal government is bloated, unaccountable, and intruding on the lives of ordinary Americans,” Fry contended. “The Convention of States project would provide much-needed accountability within our system of government. As written in the Constitution, our government is intended to serve the citizens of the United States, not politicians in Washington, DC. Through the Convention of States project, Americans champion the wisdom of our founding fathers, who first recognized the need to empower the states and safeguard the rights of our citizens.”
Previously, Rep. Fry, who served in the South Carolina Assembly, advocated for his state to pass the Convention of States resolution. According to the South Carolina team, his support was “invaluable during the process of passing the resolution in the House.” In 2021, less than one year before the South Carolina Senate officially adopted the Convention of States resolution, making the Palmetto State the 19th state to join the movement, Fry addressed a crowd of COS supporters on the importance of persistence in the legislative process.
“Persistence matters,” he said. “Advocacy matters. What you do matters… because of the Constitution and future generations. And that’s why we do what we do.”
