After two and a half years of attending, observing, and participating in Indian River County School Board meetings, citizens feel they have made little progress in asserting parental influence on the curriculum or library collection.
The August 28th meeting demonstrated the most recent example of parents' attempting to present their concerns to the Board. The agenda included parents reading from current library materials.
“House Bill 1069 states that a school district must remove books immediately if the readings are shut down, objected to, or introduced with a censor warning by School Board members.” Washington Times
Unfortunately the session unraveled with sheriff's deputies escorting North Carolina Pastor John K. Amanchukwhu from the room when he did not stop reading an objectional, sexually-explicit passage as requested. One might speculate that adverse publicity is the only way to get the media's attention.
Parents naturally expect to guide the moral development of their own children. If they see an agenda contrary to their values is being subtly normalized for their children, is there any wonder they object?
Learning to read, as part of public education, has allowed this country to excel and prosper. However, what children read is not a subject where so called "professionals" can claim expertise over parents. Content that sets moral standards, teaches right and wrong, describes what is acceptable in a culture, family, or community belongs to parents. This is something worth fighting for.
As a concerned citizen, grandfather, and Convention of States Regional Captain in this county I believe conservative citizens need to be much more vocal about protecting our freedoms. We have seen what happens when citizens sit quietly and accept policies that defy logic. We know that police are a blessed protection against evil. We know that legal immigrants enhance our communities and illegals just continue to ignore the rule of law.
COS is not really about any of these policies. COS is about respecting the Constitution. We work with our local elected officials to affirm their role as our representatives. We believe that Article V can be used to contain federal bureaucratic overreach, restrain federal spending, and limit lifelong political careers.
Someone needs to do something! Perhaps that someone is you.
