Citizen Action Day a Rousing Success!

Published in Blog Hottest on February 13, 2023 by Will T. Zwart

Convention of States Maryland rode into Annapolis on Wednesday, February 8th for our annual Citizen Action Day event, where over 50 supporters from all over the state came out to make their voices heard. As COS’rs started the day by walking the halls of the legislature, we not only gained additional petition signers, but at least four more sponsors for the resolution!

Maryland now has a total of 6 Senators and 29 Delegates sponsoring the Convention of States resolution - the most ever!

God saw fit to bring good weather that day, which was much better than anticipated, and the team gathered at Lawyer’s Mall at 1:00 PM under sunny skies. (Credit to Sallie Taylor for taking most of the photos).

By 1:30, the crowd had grown to a group of over 50. Former state director Steve Patten kicked off the rally by thanking the attendees and explaining the progress of COS Maryland and how things would work in the legislature.

He then introduced our application's sponsors Senator Justin Ready and Delegate Mark Fisher. Senator Ready graciously took time away from his committee meeting to speak to the COS supporters.

After picture-taking, the group split up into teams and signature packets were handed out. Then, it was time to walk the halls! Some of the patriots present had never even been to the Capitol, and were excited to be taking part in the civics process.

All 188 packets were delivered to the legislators in record time, and many had friendly conversations with their constituents. Another sponsor was even gained!

With the job completed and the sun going down, the COS Maryland team members headed for home to rest their feet (eight floors, two buildings, and 188 offices is a lot!) and to write letters of thanks to their legislators.

Overall, the day’s events were a perfect example of what the Founding Fathers intended for the government: citizens participating in the legislative process and making their voices heard.

In the coming weeks, look for updates on our progress through the Maryland State Legislature. COS Action Maryland is invited to testify in March to support our resolution in the Senate and House. We are now more than halfway to our goal to convene a Convention of States! 19 of the needed 34 states have passed the resolution, and we're making progress in all 50 states, including Maryland. Our national goal is to reach 24 states by 2024 and the required 34 by 2026. Momentum is on our side!
