Here's a blast from the not so distant COS Action Maryland past, originally published in March 2021
In February 1984 when Charlie Reese first penned this column for The Orlando Sentinel, Ronald Reagan was President, the XIV Winter Olympics were in Yugoslavia, the Iron Curtain of Communism was alive and well, and I was a senior in high school.
Reese’s column “545 People Are Responsible for the Mess, but They Unite in a Common Con” has become legend. Reese updated his column in 1995 and 2008 to reflect current events, but not much updating was required.
Reese referred to it as his “Frankenstein” and “the column that wouldn’t die.” It recirculates on the internet year after year. He passed away in 2013. Learn more HERE.
Reese posits that “one hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices--545 human beings out of 238 million--are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.”
This column could have been written this morning. Thirty-seven (now 38) years after its first publishing, I now have one kid in college and two in high school while my husband and I are making retirement plans. But certainly not much has changed about the facts embedded within Reese’s message. As President Reagan famously said, “Facts are stubborn things.” This is a stubborn column.
Reagan also said, “Concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.” The 38-year unvarnished truth within Reese’s message reinforces the significance of the Convention of States mission to call an Article V convention to discuss amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, impose fiscal restraints, and place term limits on federal officials.
The Founding Fathers gave us Article V to ensure that the states could protect the freedoms of the people by proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution that limit the power of the federal government--without Congress’s approval.
Why call a Convention of States? Simple: to bring power back to the states and the people, where it belongs. 545 elected politicians plus an army of unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. should not be allowed to make sweeping decisions that impact the daily lives of millions of Americans. Imagine the day when
