LAPEER — In one of their last meetings of the year, and before three of the seven members are no longer on the board, the Lapeer County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution in support of a Convention of the States to propose an amendment to the Constitution of the United States with the mission of imposing fiscal restraints on the federal government, limiting the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and limiting the terms of office for federal officials and members of Congress.
Article V of the U.S. Constitution gives states the power to call a convention to propose amendments. It takes 34 states to call the convention and 38 to ratify any amendments that are proposed. Currently, according to the progress map at conventionofstates.com, there are around 23 states that have passed the resolution [19 states have passed the resolution; 23 appears to refer to passed states, plus states with active legislation]. Michigan is not one of them, but the Lapeer County commissioners unanimously agreed to send a resolution in support.
The resolution was brought forth by Commissioner Truman Mast, with the intention of showing support for bringing power back to the states, as it was intended by those who drafted the Constitution. The resolution was approved unanimously, and this as well as other motions from Thursday will be final after next week’s full board meeting, and then sent to state officials.
