Blind Obedience Is for Dogs - Not Humans

Published in Blog on May 04, 2023 by Jen Le Blanc Mieler

“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature … If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”                                             ~ James Garfield

The other day I decided to take advantage of an absolutely gorgeous spring day and take my kids to the park. You know the day; the scent of spring's awakening blooms in the air, the sky nearly cloudless, the smell of the very air clean and fresh, and smiles on all the faces.

Shortly after arriving, I noticed a man with an off-leash dog in the area, very close to my children. It’s a situation that always sends my Momma-Radar into overdrive, and our outing quickly turned from carefree to cautious.

As I watched the pair, though, I realized almost immediately that my initial concern was unwarranted. The dog was solidly, unwaveringly, with his man. Where the master went, the pup followed. Time and again, a ball thrown was faithfully returned. A barely audible “sit” resulted in a furry bottom on the ground nearly before the command was complete. Other dogs, children, and a host of other distractions could not tear the dog's attention from the man, and all the while, a golden tail wagged in delight. It was clear that this man had diligently trained his dog in boundaries and obedience. By the end of the outing I was convinced that should the man have run into traffic, the dog would have followed unquestioningly.

As humans though, and citizens of a free nation, we were not meant for blind obedience. We were made to reason and to question. We were made to right wrongs and to advocate for truth. We were made to stand. James Garfield’s prophetic words, spoken so long ago, have come to pass. Congress, elected for the people, by the people, has strayed from its designated path. Off-leash and with seemingly no master, it has become ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, and we the people have tolerated the intolerable for far too long.

Thankfully we have a solution given to us by the Founders all those years ago.

Article V of the Constitution offers a powerful weapon to the people, a weapon which, once wielded, could spell a return to the balance of power the Founders envisioned.

A Convention of States as provided for in Article V of the U.S. Constitution is a process used to amend the Constitution and place practical limits on the actions of the Federal government and its bloated bureaucracy.

The process is simple, but not easy. Two-thirds of the States must pass an application for a Convention. Once two-thirds (34 states) have been reached, Congress must call a Convention to discuss the proposed Constitutional Amendments.

Did you catch that? Must! They don’t have a choice.

Each State may send as many delegates as they choose to the Convention, but each State has just one vote. Each amendment must then be ratified by two-thirds (38) of the states in order to become a Constitutional Amendment.

The Resolution

The Resolution has already passed in 19 states and eight more states have passed it in one of their two chambers. Several additional states are expected to take up the Resolution in 2023.
