Ever embroiled in controversy, the Biden Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) recently launched a federal investigation into the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), the largest Protestant denomination in America.
The SBC has been plagued by scandal as of late, following a disturbing report that the church organization “mishandled allegations of sexual abuse, intimidated victims and their advocates, and resisted attempts at reform over the course of two decades.” The organization responded with an apology and public commitment “to doing all we can to prevent future instances of sexual abuse in churches.”
While these allegations are shocking, they certainly don’t warrant a federal investigation. This seems to be yet another instance of Merrick Garland, the DOJ’s current Attorney General, overstepping his department’s bounds.
It’s not that these allegations of sexual abuse shouldn’t be investigated, but it simply isn’t the federal government’s job to get involved. In light of our current political environment, the fact that Biden’s administration is investigating churches is understandably enough to make the American people wary.
After the FBI’s raid on former president Donald Trump’s home earlier this week, trust in our government institutions is extremely low.
If we let the Department of Justice continue on its current path, we’ll find ourselves on a dangerously slippery slope. If the federal government has the power to “investigate” churches, how long will it be before Merrick Garland begins investigating or even punishing churches that refuse to align with his radical stance on gender and sexuality or race (something the Biden administration has already done to public schools)?
It’s time to put the federal government back inside its box, and the only way we can do that is through a Convention of States.
The Founders never intended for law-abiding citizens to live in fear of the federal government. In fact, the federal government should fear us. Unfortunately, the extent to which Biden and his DOJ are willing to use institutions of power to go after everyday citizens and political dissidents, clearly evidences how little respect they have for their constitutional limits on power.
By calling a Convention of States, the states can limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government in addition to imposing fiscal restraints, and placing term limits on federal officials - all of which will ensure that Washington D.C. never again becomes a threat to We the People.
