AOC ‘may have violated’ federal law wearing 'Tax the Rich' dress at Met Gala

Published in Blog on March 03, 2023 by Jakob Fay

Nothing says “tax the rich” like wearing an extravagant designer dress to the $35,000-per-person Met Gala.

And nothing says “privileged elitist" like doing so against the law.

Leave it up to AOC to do both.

Two years ago, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) bemused the nation when she donned a ritzy Brother Vellies gown – marked with the words “tax the rich” – at one of the most notoriously sumptuous soirees in the world, the Met Gala. AOC, of course, has positioned herself as a defender of the poor, underpaid common folk and a fierce critic of anything remotely “rich.” This is why she sells “Tax the Rich” sweaters for $67.22 on her official website. Needless to say, however, her “bold statement” at the Met Gala did not go over well with us common folk.

“Tax the Rich”……But first I’m gonna go have the time of my life partying with them all at the most extravagant over the top party of the year that is essentially a celebration of richness,” tweeted Dave Portnoy.

But then the plot thickened!

As if cosplaying the fight against “economic injustice” while rubbing elbows with the alleged purveyors of said injustice was not a bad enough look already, a new report reveals AOC might have done so illegally.

Yes, she “may have violated House rules, standards of conduct, and federal law” in attending the Met Gala.

According to USA Today, “Ocasio-Cortez was provided with the dress, a handbag, shoes and jewelry for the event…. She also received hair, makeup and transportation services as well as the use of a hotel room….” However, “it appears that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez may not have paid for several thousands of dollars’ worth of goods and services provided to her.” If so, she might have “accepted impermissible gifts” which would be a violation of House rules.

Reportedly, she did not pay for any of the pricey items (her hair styling alone cost $477) until after Congress opened an investigation.

AOC – like so many of her colleagues in Washington – makes a mockery of the American people. She proves in living color that there are two sets of standards: one for everyday dregs like you and I, and one for the elitists who lecture us about capitalism, attend opulent parties, and get away with breaking the law.

Is there any question that these people do not have our best interests at heart?

It’s time to rein in the bloated federal government, and the only way to do it is through a Convention of States. To show your support, sign the petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
