Yale, MI - On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Convention of States Michigan did a deep dive into the convention process with Michigan State House Representative Jaime Greene.
Representative Greene was one of the hand-selected Michigan delegates to the Convention of States Foundation Simulation, in Williamsburg, Virginia. She walked into the convention having no idea what to expect and walked out as one of Michigan’s strongest advocates for a convention of the states.
As we unpacked the simulation, Representative Greene explained the daily process (of the three-day event), including the committee process and the floor voting. She walked us through her victories and her defeats, as well as the many things she learned.
Overall, there is a huge informational gap about the convention process among the Michigan electorate and our representatives. This Simulation provided a great source of training and experience for everyone.
Representative Greene is now leading the charge, along with our Convention of States Michigan leadership, to craft legislation for a commissioner selection bill and a criminal penalty bill. This legislation provides a framework by which the Michigan legislature selects its delegates to represent us, and a bill to attach criminal ramifications on anyone seeking to misuse the powers of the commissioners.
This legislation keeps Michigan relevant in the national convention process and will help to engage all members of our Michigan legislature in the convention effort.
