Checks and balances are critical to safeguarding our freedoms because flawed humans cannot be trusted with total authority over others.
The separation of powers doctrine is designed to protect liberty, explains Convention of States Co-Founder Michael Farris in a preview of this Thursday's airing of Crossroads. Farris describes the separation of powers as a vital feature of limiting government power, which ultimately protects our rights.
"Nobody wants to give sinful people too much power," he describes.
The President – the executive branch – is supposed to have the power to enforce the law but not make the law.
"Now obviously, that's a real issue today with the executive orders and all manner of other executive kinds of orders," Farris explains. "That's not supposed to be the way."
