Virginia’s Statesman for Conservatism endorses Convention of States

Published in Blog on January 12, 2018 by Warren Wheeler

Morton Blackwell, influential conservative political leader and Republican Party of Virginia Executive Committee member, recently announced his support for Convention of States Project’s nationwide effort to preserve our constitutional republic.

I join Mike Farris and Mark Levin in support of a convention of the states under Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Some constitutional changes must be made. Nothing less will remove the danger that a future, solidly leftist Supreme Court would “interpret” the Constitution to eliminate the separation of powers and checks and balances in government. The great American experiment with limited government would be over. Probably things would have to get worse than they now are for public support to result in a convention of the states. It’s wise to make ready now for when that time comes.

Blackwell’s nearly six decades in conservative politics includes four years in the White House as a Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan, whom he helped to elect in 1980.

He is President of the Leadership Institute, which he founded in 1979 as a non-partisan educational foundation. The Institute has trained more than 191,000 conservatives of all ages how to succeed in politics, government, and the media through instruction in campaigns, fundraising, grassroots organizing, youth politics, and communications.

This key endorsement comes as the Convention of States Project’s Virginia team is ‘making ready’ in 2018 by fighting for House Joint Resolution (HJ) 49 and Senate Joint Resolution (SJ) 31, which set the ground rules on how Virginia's commissioners to an Article V convention will be chosen, instructed, and limited.

Join our team in Richmond on 18 January, where former U.S. Senator Jim DeMint will lead our Rally for the Republic and help us persuade the General Assembly to heed Morton Blackwell’s sage advice to “make ready now.”
