In Italy’s election this week, conservative candidate Giorgia Meloni was elected to the office of Prime Minister, and the media around the globe – especially right here in the U.S. – are taking the right-wing win as a major interruption to the progressive agenda.
Similar to the opposition attacks that continue against the Convention of States movement, the mainstream media is portraying the win by the political party, called Brothers of Italy, in a negative light.
Media outlets reported on the “return of fascism in Italy” after the huge win, stoking fear against how the people of Italy voted.
CNN reported that the win will result in “the most far-right government since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini.” The biased news outlet negatively asserted that the agenda of Meloni’s political party, which she co-founded in 2012, “is rooted in Euroskepticism and anti-immigration policies.”
Sounds similar to America. Republicans – now more precisely 'MAGA' Republicans – are perceived as anti-immigation, government skeptics as well.
The people of Italy spoke and decided that socialism is not the ideal route. Lockdowns and environmental regulations that forced public buildings to limit air conditioning this summer are not desirable styles of living.
“In Europe, we have a set of values and, of course, we will be mindful that these values are respected by everyone when it comes to human rights and the right to abortion,” France’s Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne said in a glaring indiction of tensions.
The win comes just weeks after right-wing parties in Sweden won the majority in the parliament – which is one of Europe’s most progressive nations.
Biden has yet to comment on this latest global hindrance, but his administration has already taken to Twitter to set a tone of preeminence.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken wrote:
“Following yesterday’s Italian elections, we are eager to work with Italy's government on our shared goals: supporting a free and independent Ukraine, respecting human rights, and building a sustainable economic future. Italy is a vital ally, strong democracy, and valued partner”
The shift in European politics is a glimpse of what could come this November in Washington.
When it’s all said and done, elections can improve the surface level problems facing our nation, but the core obstacles can only be abated by structural changes.
Convention of States is the core structural change that scares the elites in the same way conservative-led leadership around the world scares them. Losing control is not what they want.
For the interests of all Americans, we need a Convention of States so that amendments on the basis of term limits, budgets and limits to government power can become permanent solutions to our system of governance.
